The Mind of an Artist

Ultimately, "The Mind of an Artist" is a celebration of creativity in its purest form. It is an invitation to contemplate the complexities of the artistic mind and to find resonance within ourselves as we engage with the art. Through this exploration, we hope to foster a deeper understanding of the artistic process and, perhaps, inspire the artist within each of us.

"The Mind of an Artist" exhibition offers a profound exploration of the intricate and multifaceted nature of creativity. It invites viewers to step into the minds of artists and witness the thought processes, emotional journeys, and inspirations that culminate in works of art. The exhibition reveals that art is not merely a product, but a deeply personal narrative—a window into the inner world of the creator.

The most challenging creative processes come when artistic technique collides with the unknown of real time, place and circumstance. Making visual record of one's history is an honored tradition met with high expectation. First, a work of time and place must accurately convey the humanity (or inhumanity) of the moment. Second, it has to be appreciated for its creative approach as an artwork. Finally, it should transcend itself in meaning by addressing more universal values.

This body, started in 2016, applied these principles while focused on the American political landscape. An emerging social narrative began to focus groundbreaking relationships the nation's leadership established in grooming its voters. The series ended on January 20, 2021 with the departure of the 45th President and the inaugural of the 46th President of the United States. Yet, here we are in 2024 and nothing has changed in the nation's process of defining what democracy stands for.

My artist journey is best described as an incredible adventure, a roller coaster of highs and lows, but despite the moments of chaos, I can't imagine life without my art practice. It has transformed my life since I found my way back to it in 2018.  Prior to that, I was honestly a little lost.  I had forgotten about my love for creating, and the artist in me that had flourished as a child.

When I'm creating a piece, a message will emerge.  It's usually guidance coming source. The creative process has the power to heal and transform, and there are infinite possibilities when we're aligned and connected to our true selves.

Many of the messages that come through in my art are related to the freedom in authenticity.  Sometimes sharing these personal messages can be challenging, but they need to be shared. I hope it resonates with whoever it's meant to connect with.

My work is primarily abstract acrylic. My process isn't formal, but getting grounded and playful puts me in creative flow.

For the images I produce as an artist, I have conducted research in Niger, West Africa, where I lived for three 

years. My art involves an exploration of the Nigerien landscape, the Djarma and Fulani cultures and the art forms they create. This abstract work portrays ritual and tradition in Nigerien culture.

To create my imagery, I work from a variety of references. Relationships among color, shape, and texture come together to form fluid and grid-like compositions. Color dominates the images and dictates the media employed to produce them. Drawing, painting, mixed-media and collage are the focus of my artistic repertoire.

Gretchen Beck served as Chair of the Art Department, Professor of Art, Curator and on the faculty at Concordia University, Irvine, CA, for eleven years. Currently, she is a professional artist.

As a collaborative artist duo, we've used our convergent paths to push the boundaries of social and esoteric 

norms through our monumental sculptural forms. As a husband and wife team, our journey began with the formation of sacred geometries and evolved into dynamic metal and stone sculptures that provoke introspection, interactivity, and exploration.

We symbolically evoke the contrasts and similarities between nature and structure, crafting pieces that challenge preconceptions and invite viewers to delve into the intersections of society and the metaphysical. Our art sparks conversations, fostering empathy and understanding while also encouraging spectators to explore their internal motivations and psychological impulses. Ultimately our work seeks to elicit an emotional reaction through physical form by combining elements of contemporaneity with timelessness.

My photo landscapes, all derived from satellite imagery, do not idealize conventional beauty found in mountain vistas or pastoral valleys. Instead, they provide overviews of vast urban worksites filled with factories, warehouses, and residential construction sites. The streets, buildings, and parking lots are rearranged with Photoshop to create entirely new landscapes according to my own vision, fantasy, or whim. In a departure from convention, these aerial landscapes are overlaid with enlarged and carefully camouflaged hand tools, yielding figure-ground compositions that are initially difficult to see. Whereas figure-ground compositions normally emphasize sharp contrasts, their delineation in my work is subtle and delicate. Depending on how they are viewed, the oversized tools either emerge from or disappear into the aerial landscapes below. The longer we look, the more the imagery morphs, the boundaries blur, and our familiar orientation slips away. Although derived from satellite photos, the composition and content leave viewers wondering if the works are paintings, dreams, visions, or even hallucinations instead.

My work is a journey through the realms of my subconscious, providing a space to recognize and process emotions, seeking spirituality and deeper meaning in life. Highlighting the transient nature of existence, I create multilayered photography underwater, the process that forces me to submerge and face my fears. This underwater realm mimics the liminal state of mind—an initiation just before meeting with one’s new self. In the context of metamodernism, my art reflects the oscillation between hope and despair, sincerity and irony, striving to compress the indeterminacy of time into a single image, capturing moments in forms not normally visible to the naked eye. I incorporate elements from Ana Mendieta’s earth-body works and René Magritte’s technique of obscuring faces, creating a dialogue between the visible and the hidden. Inspired by Yves Klein, I use my body as a brush to express intense experiences and feelings as the means to release pain and seek catharsis. Water, a powerful symbol of rebirth, becomes my co-creator, infusing my work with spontaneity and collaboration. Thus, my art invites viewers to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery, using these visual narratives to confront their inner fears and embrace continuous change and rebirth.

I am a “creative visionary” with the soul of an artist & the heart of a Social Worker. I was born, raised, and still live in Johnson City, TN. I believe that this small, typically conservative, town forced me to find alternative creative outlets even as a child. As I grew up, my artistic nature was not valued in my family, so I didn’t tap into my creative side for many years. During the pandemic I began to desire to create again this time as an adult with no rules or lines to color within. I find the most joy working with mixed media by combining ordinary things with other mediums that don’t traditionally “fit” together; much like me. I have found great joy and healing via this avenue and am excited to be able to share it with folks that appreciate it and find their own joy through my lens.

I encounter the world through photography, striving to see and know the forms and spirit of things. I explore the glory & pathos, the heroism & hubris of humanity and our struggle to find and create meaning. One influence is Georgia O'Keeffe, who could draw a banana plant or paint a landscape pregnant with the human condition. Another is Margaret Bourke-White, who saw beauty in industry. Themes include #PerformanceArt, #HardHatArt, #EarthAbstracts, #CreatureEncounter, #IntimateLandscape, #ArchitecturalAbstracts. Framing is a foundational aesthetic and tool of the photographer. Imposing frames on reality profoundly disrupts reality, isolating, freezing, re-presenting a fragment of time and space, which humans by and large experience as continuous. Whatever my subject-nature, industry, architecture-I use abstraction, framing and techniques like selective focus, color, and monochrome to transform telling details and fleeting insights into an invitation to viewers to see and know as well.

The allegorical paintings of Roe LiBretto incorporate an innovative watercolor technique ritualizing her acknowledgment that a painting is the physical manifestation of information found in what Carl Jung referred to as the collective unconscious. The grainy texture of each piece is created by painting over a finished watercolor with a topcoat of tempera paint and, after that is dry, washing the painting. This technique imbues her work with an antique quality, reflecting the timeless story each painting portrays. Born in Brooklyn, Roe studied at the Brooklyn Museum, the School of Visual Arts, and City College of New York. Her drawings and sculptures have been exhibited internationally and she received commissions, from the New York City Cultural Council and the Massachusetts State Council on the Arts.

When I relinquish control, the more creative energy manifests itself and arouses my authentic vision. Inspiration comes from the diverse beauty of the surrounding universe. I am fascinated by the symmetry, chaos, brilliance and the diffuse nature presented for each of our senses. One great canvas urges me to emulate its wonder with my voice. The beauty occurs to me. We all see it but sometimes unaware of the specificity of each miracle. My ambition is to capture an idea seen but previously undiscovered. Then decide what is the actual reality and what is the illusion. Since the beginning of what we know as time, our existence has been in a constant state of flux constantly moving, constantly reforming, constantly transforming our beings and our perception of reality. Since 2009, I have been exclusively making ink drawings. Drawing is the means that I use to examine the 

alarming continuum of Art and destruction.

My drawing encompasses the questioning of the commemorative with the homage, indicative

of omens and elegies, and which attempts to visualise the disappeared and the erased.

The destruction of Art caused by cultural atrocities lingers like a long shadow in modernist history. The dark shadows in my drawings mediate between cancellation, and an unsettling

entente with the barely discernible.

In terms of appearance, what is instant and immediately visible, seems untrustworthy--not unlike the apparatus of power in repressive regimes. By examining the empty spaces left behind after confiscations and annihilation, I engage with the space in each drawing, between what is visible and what is absent

I’ve always been interested in abstraction with meaning and have wondered how this could be achieved without losing the direct experience of color and form. In general, I want to expand the notion of painting as self-contained, to move it beyond the frame and allow it to become part of the world rather than depicting a world within the painting. That is, from the production of clearly defined categories to things that hover in-between… To arrive at the forms in the painting, I quickly and without a plan fold colored paper, drop the resulting shapes on the floor and then photograph, enlarge and trace the shapes onto a painting surface. Once finished, I try to match one of the colors in the painting to a commercial wall color. Ellsworth Kelly was my most meaningful inspiration as he often included architecture and as he says of his “Colors for a Large Wall”, “they’re in-between”.

As an abstract artist, my artistic style revolves around my fascination with color and form. I place great emphasis on the beauty and expression that color can bring, often layering different hues together to create visually captivating compositions. I find myself drawn to more modern aesthetics, preferring clean lines and distinct forms in my artwork. I am particularly drawn to the simplicity and precision that clean lines and forms offer. Whether incorporating geometric shapes or organic forms, I seek to create a sense of balance and order within my artwork. In my creative process, color takes center stage as the main element of my expression. I enjoy exploring a wide range of colors, and mixed media, experimenting with their various shades, tones, and combinations. By layering colors together, I aim to evoke a sense of depth and complexity in my pieces, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the visual experience. Inspiration for my work is taken from observing unique patterns of color in nature as well as everyday scenes as they pass by and become abstracted and mentally cataloged. Music plays a significant, almost synesthetic role in the process of making a painting. Mental images take on a softer and more lyrical appearance as they are translated onto the canvas with each mark, color choice, and brush stroke. I first began painting after visually seeing hues of the music I was listening to - patterns of color formed, then a composition in my mind and I was compelled to paint what I was experiencing. For me it’s all about tapping into that flow state and creating work that exudes joy, beauty, and sometimes the unexpected. Everything is energy, finding the right movement, vibration, and fluidity of making a visually striking composition that draws the viewer in while inviting them to explore the world of color with me.

"The Spectacle Within Me" is a series of continuous images that depict the act of wiping away a name stamp from an eye. By the final frame, the stamp is partially erased, and the eye has been distorted into a gesture associated with racism.

This work explores the profound cultural identity struggles that arise from geopolitical tensions, manifesting in forms of racism. The name stamp symbolizes one's individual cultural identity and the act of erasing it signifies the pressure to conform and be categorized. The Asian Subdivision Act and a series of government-led exclusionary policies have been steadily erasing the presence of the Chinese in American society. In the context of ongoing geopolitical issues between China and America, it becomes increasingly difficult to fully embrace both cultures within a single identity. Racism emerges as a byproduct of this forced categorization. The piece ultimately argues for the necessity of respecting individual identity as a fundamental principle
